Edwin Gonzales (DJ Gonzo), pianist, percussionist, and DJ was born in El Callao- Peru. At the age of 16 he moved to New York City. He studied music at Queens College Music School and learned Latin percussion at Boys Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts. In NYC, he played piano for “Latin Connection”, a local Queens Salsa band. At the age of 21, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for several years. There he played for various Salsa bands including: Orquesta Nueva Creacion, Orquesta Rumbon, Orquesta Salsabor, Orquesta Salsafever, Orquesta Mi Gente, and finally in Texas with “Louis Shati & Su Orquesta”. He started spinning back in 2002 while deployed in Kosovo. There, Latino soldiers needed a Salsa night, since DJ Gonzo had already built a great Salsa collection and took it everywhere he went, he volunteered to give it a try. He felt in love with spinning ever since. DJ Gonzo has disk jockeyed for several important Salsa events in Texas including: Texas Salsa Extravaganza, Texas Salsa Open Finals 2007 (I & II), Guaguanco’s Anniversary 2007, and the Houston Salsa Congress 2007 as well as several Latin clubs in Texas.
